Writer-director Michael Tolkin, centres his satire on wealthy Beverly Hills couple Peter Witner (Peter Weller) and Katherine Witner (Judy Davis) who have become so accustomed to their materialist lifestyle that they feel helpless when they lose their jobs and face bankruptcy.

Disillusioned, they both have affairs and try starting a business together. In order to find meaning to their lives, they follow various New Age gurus which provide little comfort. Eventually, they hit rock bottom and have to make some hard decisions.

Trivia: Isabelle Adjani was cast in Judy Davis' role, but left the production before shooting began.
