After the death of her father, Little Voice or LV (Jane Horrock) never goes out and hardly ever says a word. She just sits in her bedroom singing along to her record collection of Shirley Bassey, Judy Garland, and Marilyn Monroe. Her mother (Brenda Blethyn) brings home a third-rate, sleazy talent agent, Ray Say for a nightcap where he hears LV's beautiful rendition of Judy Garland's "Somewhere Over the Rainbow". As he believes he can make her a star, he forces her to appear in a local seedy nightclub run by a Mr Boo (Jim Broadbent).
