Jed (Alec Baldwin) is an egotistical medical specialist who runs into an old classmate, Andy Safian (Bill Pullman), who is now a college dean. Andy invites Jed to stay in the attic bedroom of the house he and his wife Tracy (Nicole Kidman) are renovating but Tracy seems to dislike him.

While Andy is assisting the police with a serial killer on the grounds of the campus, Tracy is rushed to hospital to be operated on by Jed. He removes a ruptured ovary but then decides to take out the other - discovering later it was healthy.
