In 1962, Calvin Webber (Christopher Walken) a paranoid scientist and his wife, Helen (Sissy Spacek) living in Los Angeles have a plane crash into their garden and believing the blast is "the big one," they move into their elaborate bomb shelter, and raise their son Adam (Brendan Fraser) for 35 years till he ventures out to discover life and love above ground.
