In the aftermath of the Vietnam War two struggling families vent on each other over, among other things, a tree-house. Kevin Costner stars as a traumatised veteran haunted by wartime memories while his wife (Mare Winningham) keeps the family afloat.

Meanwhile, the dysfunctional neighbour kids are challenging them for control of a tree fort, leaving the volatile son (Elijah Wood) to learn some valuable life lessons.
